A pariah in his own Party, Republican North Carolina Congressman and key bump aficionado Madison Cawthorn is experiencing fundraising, with his personal campaign account down to about a quarter million and his PACs hovering around zero, the Daily Beast reports.
Cawthorn has failed to raise a single dollar for his joint PAC with the National Republican Congressional Committee after raising $673,000 in the last cycle. The account, called “Cawthorn Triumph,” gave about 60% of the donations to the RNCC, while rolling $83,000 for his own campaign and the remaining $65,000 went to MADISON Leadership PAC, Cawthorn’s fund from which he helps other candidates.
But MADISON PAC–MADISON stands for “Making A Difference In Service to Our Nation”–has only raised $2,000–and that came from a single donation from the group’s treasurer, who is also the treasurer of Cawthorn’s campaign.
Cawthorn is stuck in a financial rut: no relatively respectable members of the GOP will help him raise money, he’s not raising funds, and he’s spending money like an actually drunken midshipman. MADISON PAC rolled up $4,000 in expenses at the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in Miami; there’s no record of what the money was spent on, nor is there documentation of what Cawthorn may have been doing down in the cocaine capital of the United States.
The facts that Cawthorn isn’t raising money for the national Party and the national Party isn’t supporting Cawthorn’s reelection–financially or with manpower–puts the freshman Congressman behind the eight ball in the campaign. Establishment Republicans, tired of his often-lying and always self-promoting antics, are mounting challenges to him in the primary.
