Syracuse University suspended 23 students for an “incredibly reckless” gathering on campus Wednesday night that one administrator said “may have done damage enough to shut down campus,” CNN reports.
Intending to start in-person classes on Monday, Syracuse had required all students who opted-in to living on campus to have negative coronavirus tests. The gathering, however, called those plans into question.
Photos online show more than a hundred students gathering at one of the outdoor areas on campus. School administrators are trying to identify the students who took part in the meet-up, according to a letter sent by wrote the dean of students, Marianne Thomson, and the head of public safety, chief Bobby Maldonado.
Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation J. Michael Haynie said the gathering “may have done damage enough to shut down campus, including residence halls and in-person learning, before the academic semester even begins.”
