German doctors stated that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is showing signs that he was poisoned, but is likely to survive the event, the Associated Press reports.
Navalny was transported to a German hospital from Siberia Saturday after his family implored the Russian government to allow him to be transported out of the country to seek treatment after Russian doctors couldn’t confirm what was sickening him.
German doctors confirmed that they found cholinesterase inhibitors in his system. Cholinesterase inhibitors are commonly found in pesticides, but also in nerve agents. The Germans could not confirm what toxic substance was used on Navalny.
Navalny remains in a coma in critical condition at a Berlin hospital under heavy security.
