Donald Trump is likely no longer in contempt of court, New York State Attorney General Leticia James said after Trump and his corporation handed over documentation that had been subpoenaed months before, Reuters reports.
A lawyer from James’ office said in a letter to the court that a series of affidavits filed by Trump employees was sufficient to lift the contempt order that was issued by the judge in April. Trump had run up fines of $110,000 before a judge froze the fines, which were accruing at $10,000 per day.
“Respondent’s counsel must rely upon current employees to provide the required information,” the letter said. “[We] are prepared to agree that the affidavits satisfy the court’s order because it is not apparent what else, if anything, the respondent and his counsel can be ordered to do.”
Trump will still be responsible for paying the outstanding fines, which are not erased simply because he complied with a legal subpoena. He can appeal the fines, and if he refuses to pay, he can be jailed for contempt.
