The embattled chief of the Uvalde School District Police, who botched the response to a gunman at Robb Elementary School in May who killed 19 students and two teachers, has resigned from the Uvalde city council, Forbes reports.
Pete Arredondo was elected to the council before the mass murder but wasn’t sworn in until weeks after the shooting; the mayor chose to hold the swearing-in in secret after announcing that Arredondo would not be seated until weeks later.
Even still, Arredondo did not attend the first public meeting of the council and requested a leave of absence, which the council refused to grant, forcing Arredondo to attend meetings to be expelled. Arredondo remains chief of the schools’ police force, but he is on leave pending investigation.
