“Democratic” West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin will not support any funding for the Administration’s climate change goals nor will he support raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans, effectively killing another Democratic initiative to pass a financial bill that would only need 50 Senators to pass, the Washington Post reports.
Just days ago, Manchin had signed on to an initiative to increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans to pay for increasing costs of healthcare by closing the Medicare loophole, which caps federal withholdings for Medicare at a specific dollar amount, so people who earn high salaries are not paying the full percentage.
After discussing the issues with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Manchin appeared to back off some of his early objections relating to the environmental issues in the bill, but Manchin reportedly told Schumer today that he wouldn’t support any bill with those provisions.
