Random thoughts Friday, Volume LXXXVII

  • President Biden keeps the railroads running.  And without being a fascist.  Shocking, isn’t it?
  • While Biden resolved a labor dispute that could’ve crippled the economy, DeSantis and Abbott continue their performance art with human props and taxpayer funds.
  • Just want to point out that both Ted Cruz’s father and Marco Rubio’s parents came to the US as asylum-seeking refugees, just like the human props used by their governors, shipping them around the country.  Would Ted and Marco like their parents used as political fodder?
  • Abbott and DeSantis should be charged in Massachusetts with kidnapping by inveiglement:  DeSantis funded, and Abbott executed, the kidnapping of these individuals who were lied to by being told they would be given jobs, housing and necessities in Massachusetts before being dumped on the side of a road.
  • I seriously thought Lindell would be an Arby’s kinda guy ‘cause, y’know, the meats.
  • Lindsey Graham’s abortion ban proposal demonstrated this week the whole “life begins at conception” argument is crap and it’s all about controlling people.  It’s a transparently political issue for Republicans, not a moral one.
  • Graham violated the two principle canons of the GOP:  First, never offer a compromise.  Two, never vary from the extreme position.  They believe the first makes them look weak and the second proves them to be hypocrites.
  • The most important races in upcoming elections are local school boards.  Work needs to start now to defeat book-banning Republicans.  To find candidates to back, check with your local teachers union.
  • Given what we learn on a regular basis about Trump’s lies–and his lawyers’ lies–about the government documents at Mar-a-Lago, if I was an opposing attorney in any case involving Trump, I would assume every document submitted to the court was a lie.
  • Autumn is here:  the sounds of a high school football game, with the bands and the muffled P.A. announcer can be heard in the distance.
  • The GOP has suddenly realized embracing Trumpism nationwide is a losing proposition in general elections.  Their crass pivot to the middle after primaries will not succeed this cycle.  New Hampshire will show them that.
  • Chunky peanut butter is a conspiracy plotted by Big Dental to drive office visits.
  • Why hasn’t Ginny Thomas’s phone been seized by the FBI yet?  Oh….. right.
  • President Joe Biden pushed his cancer moonshot this week.  Immediately, Jim Jordan questioned why it should be funded because it won’t help all the people who already died of cancer before and Ted Cruz said it just shows Democrats don’t care about drug companies.
  • Watching video of his public briefings, you can tell something’s seriously wrong with Putin–ALS, Parkinson’s, some type of degenerative disorder–which may be why so many Russians are publicly challenging his leadership.
  • Foods go in and out of fashion:  Fondue had a turn in the 1970s.  Tall dishes were the rage in the 1980s.  Coffee took over the 1990s, and the 2010s went to the avocado.  But one thing I’d like to see come back are Jello salads.  Fruit suspended in flavored gelatin?  Brilliant!
  • Ya gotta love a good, genuine farmers market.  Fresh food to take home or eat there, plus a nice mix of artisans and local causes.  If you want to learn about a community, shop at the nearest farmers market.
  • Lettuce-based main dish salads:  The Cobb is the ideal dinner salad. Chef’s salads are more meat heavy than I want in a salad.  The Waldorf, though technically not a lettuce-based salad, is properly served on a bed of lettuce.  A proper Caesar with anchovies, and chicken, works well and can be assembled quickly.  And the Wedge, which is my go-to pre-steak-dinner salad,   My restaurant favorite:  Sabitino’s Bookmaker salad, with homemade dressing featuring enough garlic to raise the dead.
  • Hopefully the special master finds Junior’s hidden stash of Colombian Marching Powder and can get through the documents quickly.
