White nationalist groups working at the order of Russian intelligence agents undertook a letter bomb campaign against Spanish government officials either as a test run for a wider campaign or as a signal of what the Kremlin is willing to do to supporters of Ukraine’s defense, US and European officials believe.

According to the New York Times, letter bombs were sent to the residence of the Spanish Prime Minister; the US and Ukrainian embassies in Spain; the Spanish Defense Ministry; and two other locations in November.  One person, an employee of the Ukrainian embassy, was injured in an explosion; the other devices were intercepted before detonating.  The United States government labeled the bombings an act of terrorism.

Western officials believe the Kremlin directed the extremist Russian Imperial Movement nationalist group, designated a global terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department, to undertake the campaign.  Members of the group have been tracked to Spain and France, and sources say the Russians have met with their counterpart Spanish nationalist groups.  US officials are concerned that the letter bombing effort is meant to intimidate Western leaders supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian invaders, using third parties with ties to the Russian intelligence agencies and military to carry out the attacks rather than direct government sources, which would prompt retaliation.

The crazed gunman who shot and killed 10 people at a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterrey Park, California on Saturday night was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a vehicle on Sunday, law enforcement officials told CBS News. Cops had surrounded the vehicle, described as a white cargo van, when the still-publicly unidentified asshole self-canceled.

From an administrative perspective, John Roberts may go down as one of the most incompetent Chief Justices in history.  Appointed to the panel’s top position even though he had never heard a case on the Supreme Court, Roberts went from being a first-time judge on a US Federal Appeals Court to Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court in a staggeringly fast five years, thanks to the need of George W. Bush to secure his legacy on the Court. 

As the New York Times outlines, in his 17 years as the judicial and administrative lead of the Court, Roberts has done virtually nothing to update and codify the operations of the Court in modern times.  The first Chief Justice of the Digital Age, he rules from the bench on issues dealing with every citizen’s privacy and online liberties, but he’s done little to make sure the Court itself is keeping up with the times and those rulings.  That not only foretold the unsatisfying “we don’t know” report about the leak of the  Dobbs decision; it likely enabled and preordained the outcome, as well as the leak itself.  And it also means no one is dissuaded from violated the accepted norms again.

When interviewed by investigators, staff outlined practices that would not stand in a modern business.  Employees routinely shared passcodes to secure areas.  Passwords to internal systems haven’t been changed in years, and Justices regularly give clerks access to their files via their passwords.  Policies do not exist about accessing Court documents, which are confidential but do not fall under classified document protocols, outside the Courthouse.  While access to printed and handwritten notes and drafts was restricted inherently thanks to the physical limitations of paper, digital files could be accessed and read by anyone looking at a screen anywhere thanks to the current lack of restrictions.  (On the other hand, the Court’s security with even paper documents is lacking:  the report noted “burn bags” were left unattended for multiple days by Court officials when they should be disposed of nightly.)

Former Biden Administration COVID-19 czar Jeff Zients will take over for Ron Klain as White House Chief of Staff, the Washington Post reports citing four sources in the administration.

Zients oversaw the successful distribution of tens of millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses during the nationwide rollout in 2021, saving the American economy while hundreds of thousands of mostly Republican-voting anti-vaxxers still died pointlessly. Zients left in April 2022 but was back in the White House in the fall, working with Klain on a number of different projects. Zients is well-regarded in the administration and comes with far more private sector than government and political experience, having served in various posts in the Obama White House between 2010 and 2017.

During a briefing Sunday on the mass shooting that left 10 dead and another 10 wounded in Monterrey Park, California, Los Angeles County Sheriff Nick Luna told reporters the still at-large suspect in the shooting is an Asian male between the ages of 30 and 50. Separately, Chester Chong, chairman of the Los Angeles Chinese Chamber of Commerce told KABC the terrorist attack stemmed from a domestic dispute, based what he’s heard from the community.

Chased down by reporters at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, shitbag Republican Congressman George Santos admitted he had in the past dressed in women’s clothes in Brazil, WABC reports.

At least 10 people are dead and another 10 injured at a mass shooting at a Lunar New Year party Saturday night at a dance hall in Monterrey Park, California in Los Angeles County, the AP reports. The male shooter is still at large, no description of his identity or motive have been made public yet. A witness told the AP that the shooter was firing a long gun indiscriminately into the crowd.

Hordes of hipsters of all ages made their way to Norfolk, Virginia Saturday morning for a giveaway of albums, mostly vinyl, by a local public radio station that was making room for an expanding newsroom.  As the Washington Post reports, WHRO switched to an all-digital format, making the collection of tens of thousands of records and CDs superfluous.  The station tried selling it and donating it but found no takers for the classical music catalog stretching back fifty years.

Instead of trashing the collection, the station opened its doors. They first planned for 500 people, but demand became so great, they had to cap attendance at 1,000, split into smaller groups with specific timeslots that allow them to browse the collection for 30 minutes.  A group of 100 premium ticketholders, sold for a $75 minimum donation to the public radio station, were able to search the collection for two hours before the rabble were allowed in.

A demonstration in Atlanta protesting the police killing of an activist who opposed the development of an 82-acre forest outside the city to build a police training facility dubbed “Cop City” quickly turned violent Saturday evening, Reuters reports.

Questions remain about the shooting of 26-year-old Manuel Teran, one of dozens of protestors who have established campsites on the land designated for the facility.  Some of the demonstrators have been there for months when police swept through the area Wednesday to evict the demonstrators.  Police say Teran refused to vacate a tent and eventually fired a gun from inside the tent, wounding an officer.  Police say they returned fire, killing Teran.  As evidence, police released a photo of a handgun they say Teran had.

Demonstrators started marching through the streets of Atlanta, but soon protestors started shooting off fireworks and bottle rockets.  Others broke store windows while some set an Atlanta Police car on fire.

Separately the AP reports six more documents with classified markings were found.

Biden White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain will step down some time within the next few weeks pending a replacement being picked, the New York Times reports, characterizing the coming exit as a matter of simple burnout after a grueling two years than any sort of internal turmoil.

Klain already lasted longer than any of Trump’s four chiefs of staff, each of them (save for Mark Meadows) fired by Donald after telling him too much of what he didn’t want to hear, and Meadows going down with the ship after the humiliating loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Possible choices to succeed Klain include Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, former COVID czar Jeff Zients, White House domestic policy adviser Susan Rice, counselor Steve Richetti, and former Delaware Governor Jack Markell, and senior adviser Anita Dunn.

Best we can summarize what actually happened is this: In 2018 Hunter had an assistant fill out a rental application for a luxury apartment complex in Los Angeles. The assistant listed Joe Biden’s Wilmington home as the “current address” and “Owasco PC” the name of a company he owns as the “current residence” for some reason. The assistant wrote “$49,910” under the “monthly rent” field for Owasco PC. That figure was not the amount Hunter was paying to live at Owasco PC, but what Owasco PC was paying quarterly to rent office space at the Swedish House, a property in the Georgetown area of DC, also home to the Swedish Embassy to the United States.
