Acting director of marine investigations for the Canadian Transportation Safety Board Lija Bickis last week wrote in a letter to the director general of the Transportation Ministry an outline the findings of the board’s investigation into the Titan submersible implosion last June but also warning her office had “identified that there have been other submersibles with people on board operating within Canadian waters and the Canadian EEZ, both before and after June 2023. Some of these submersibles are registered in Canada, some are registered outside of Canada, and some are without registration. The investigation has also established that there are Canadian regulatory requirements regarding these operations, and there is an internal Transport Canada (TC) policy on passenger submersible craft dated June 2005. However, the investigation has been unable to confirm whether the submersibles have been subject to oversight by TC or other certifying bodies.”

“The foregoing is provided for whatever follow-up action is deemed appropriate. The TSB would appreciate being advised of any action that is taken in this regard. Upon completion of investigation M23A0169, the Board will release its report into the occurrence,” the letter concluded.

Her rulings would of course open to interlocutory appeal and thus further delay, this already on top of 70-something days still remaining in the normal pre-trial schedule set by Chutkan.

We try to be optimistic about it, that maybe Smith and his team would be able to both circumvent such a review process and trim down the pretrial preparation period by dropping from the indictment the elements of the conspiracy that rely upon what could fall under “official acts” like the conversations Trump had with Mike Pence and the coup attempt inside the Justice Department where the fat fuck tried to install soon-to-be-disbarred scumbag Jeffrey Clark. Some of Smith’s guy’s arguments at the Supreme Court hinted that this could be the direction that they’ll go.

Securities and Exchange Commission officials are looking into another bid to remove drug-addled billionaire man-boy Elon Musk from running a publicly traded company – namely Tesla – over his late disclosures of Twitter share purchases prior to his 2022 buyout, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The Journal got their hands on testimony from Musk in a deposition to the SEC after it surfaced in discovery in an Oklahoma firefighter pension fund’s lawsuit against Musk last month. In it, the asshole admitted to ignoring a rule requiring him to file a notice once his interest in Twitter passed 5 percent, waiting until his stake was at 9 percent and he was offered a seat on the board – while he and an adviser told a bank they were following the rule. The whole point of the scam was to keep Twitter’s share price from surging if other investors had known. Which they would have.

The South African dipshit saved at least $143 million on the scam, per the Journal, whose article overall seems to characterize this as a much stronger case than previous efforts to dickpunch Musk.

Maryland’s Democratic Governor Wes Moore will pardon more than 100,000 people convicted of 175,000 marijuana-related charges in a ceremony on Monday morning, the Washington Post reports, marking one of the widest issues of clemency for pot convictions.

When Maryland legalized recreational marijuana use in 2022, the law directed the judicial branch to expunge the records of hundreds of thousands of people whose only convictions were for simple possession of cannabis, and it gave pathways for others to seek an expungement of their records if there were other charges as well.

Republican Mike Braun is leaving the relative calm of the United States Senate to make a run for governor of Indiana, and he’s learning how screwed up state Republican Party operations actually are.  Case in point: according to the Indianapolis Star, the delegates to the state’s GOP convention rejected Braun’s choice to be his lieutenant governor and are forcing him to pair with a local minister.

Braun wanted state legislator Julie McGuire to be his running mate for the top of the ticket in November, but delegates instead matched him with Noblesville pastor Micah Beckwith who ran a campaign among the delegates stressing their need to be independent of the Governor-nominee and force Braun to select him.  It worked:  the delegates vetoed McGuire and inserted Beckwith onto the ticket against Braun’s will, and now Braun is stuck with him.

Eight months after NASA engineers feared the spacecraft has lost function, Voyager 1’s four scientific instruments are now back online and sending data back to Earth from about 15 billion miles away, The Verge reports.  After the signals coming from Voyager 1 were indecipherable starting last November, engineers essentially hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and reset all the systems very slowly because radio signals take 45 hours to get there.

NASA reported, however, that the four scientific systems on the craft–measuring plasma waves, magnetic fields, and space-bound particle–had all returned usable data in the past week, with the reset of a syncing system required as part of some final maintenance.  Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 is the farthest manmade object from Earth.  Some estimate the craft could continue to function into 2036.
