A new study concludes that the use of masks, social distancing, hand washing and other non-pharmaceutical interventions saved an estimated 831,000 lives in the United States during the pandemic, particularly during the early days when vaccinations weren’t available, a new study finds.

The researchers note that not all the averted deaths would have been associated with the Covid virus; during the first two years of the pandemic, the fatality rate of seasonal influenza also dropped thanks to the more hygienic habits of the population.

Powerful, Chinese-built ship-to-shore cranes at ports around the United States are equipped with mysterious communications devices that may be relaying information about American economy and trade to the Chinese government, Congressional officials found in an investigation, according to The Wall Street Journal (via the National Desk).

Michigan MAGA lawyer Stefanie Lambert, the far right scumbag charged last year with tampering with a Dominion ballot tabulator she and several co-conspirators stole from a township clerk, is now a fugitive from justice as the Detroit News’s Craig Mauger reports that, as of 4:10 PM EDT on Thursday, Lambert had not shown up to her 3 PM pretrial hearing, prompting the the judge to issue a bench warrant. They should check Mike Lindell’s safe house first when they start looking for her.

The Florida state senate, surprisingly including the Republicans, removed the co-founder of the sexual adventurers’ club Moms for Libertines Liberty, a nominee of returning Florida Republican Governor and guest garden gnome Ron DeSantis from a list of nominees for the state ethics commission after it received a complaint from a citizen that she’s a lobbyist and barred from such a position, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Tina Descovich was removed from a list of DeSantis nominees after the slate had been approved on Party lines by the senate’s Ethics and Elections Committee, but she was later removed from the roster after a political consultant noted to the commission that her actions for Moms for Liberty clearly amounted to lobbying, an activity disqualifying for nominees to the Commission on Ethics.

Her removal comes just a few months after the Commission’s former chairman, Glen Gilzean, was forced to resign from the panel because he had the $400,000-per-year position given to him by DeSantis to oversee the land Disney previously operated; state rules bar someone on state government salary from sitting on the Ethics Commission. Gilzean was also been named by DeSantis to oversee Orange County elections, a job that comes with a $200,000 per year salary; it’s unclear if the Ethics Commission would condone one person simultaneously holding these two positions.

Fresh off winning her primary, Republican California Congresswoman Michelle Steel on Thursday told the House she does “not support federal restrictions on IVF” and she’s removing herself from her sponsorship of the Life at Conception Act, NBC News reports.

“I’m removing myself from the bill because it could create confusion about my support for the blessings of having children through IVF. I hereby remove my name as cosponsor,” Steel said after catching a lot of shit for conceiving it and then coming up with a lame, non-binding resolution to affirm support for protecting IVF. Her likely Dem opponent Derek Tran kept the pressure up.

“Michelle Steel just admitted she’s been lying to every one of her constituents about her abortion-banning, IVF-restricting legislation,” Tran told NBC in a written statement. “She can try to explain this away all she wants, but Californians see her exactly for who she is – a reproductive right-dismantling extremist who has no business representing the interests of California’s 45th District.”

Donald Trump’s legal woes don’t stop at American shores:  the British high court ordered him to pay Christopher Steele’s firm, Orbis Business Intelligence, more than £600,000 (roughly $770,000) to cover the company’s legal fees incurred in defending itself against a defamation suit Trump filed, the BBC reports.

Apparently knowing Trump’s character, High Court Judge Karen Steyn ordered Trump to pay half, £300,000, while the Court auditors determine the final amount due.  Trump sued Orbis for creating the “Steele dossier” which assembled unconfirmed opposition research reports about Trump’s activities in Russia, including a claim that he hired prostitutes to urinate on a hotel bed once used by the Obamas.  Trump denies the accusation.  Last month, Steyn determined that the suit was “bound to fail” in the courts, halting the suit.
