Led by Formula One’s only Black driver, Team Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, 14 of the 20 drivers in today’s race at the Austrian Grand Prix took a knee in pre-race ceremonies.
Nineteen of the 20 drivers wore t-shirts emblazoned with “End Racism”; Hamilton wore a shirt with the “Black Lives Matter” logo on the front and “End Racism” on the back.
A UK native, Hamilton is a six-time World Champion. His team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One, fielded an all-black car for the race instead of Mercedes’ traditional silver color.
Hamilton finished fourth in today’s race. His Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, won the race.
