President Trump pronounced yesterday that the next round of economic relief, made necessary because of the reignition of coronavirus infections because of a lack of a national response, must include payroll tax cuts.
With more than 50 million Americans filing for unemployment benefits over the last 17 weeks, payroll tax cuts will not have a direct impact on a growing number of citizens, however, because people who don’t get paychecks won’t see reductions in payroll tax breaks.
Both republicans and Democrats advocate for direct relief payments made to all Americans as a way to assist housing, health and food stability.
The White House and some conservative “thought” leaders, however, think that relief payments will de-incentivize people to return to work. Trump has stated he believes such efforts to help families impacted by COVID and the economic aftermath is an attempt to undermine his campaign for reelection and help Democrats.
