Oliver has made repeated slights of Danbury on his HBO show, mocking its history of the hat-making capital of the United States and its stone castle attraction.
In response, the mayor of Danbury, Mark Boughton, make a joking video that the city was naming its sewage treatment plant in Oliver’s “honor.” Later in the week Boughton announced that the dedication was done in jest.
But nay, nay, said Oliver, proclaiming that of all the things in the world he could have, he wanted the naming rights to the plant, and he offered the city, population 84,000, $55,000 for charities including food banks.
