In another sign of US vehicle manufacturers transitioning production capacity away from internal combustion engines, General Motors has taken an 11% share in alternative-fuel vehicle maker Nikola, the Associated Press reports.
GM will produce Nikola’s Badger hydrogen fuel cell and electric pickup truck, which will begin production by the end of 2022. The vehicles will use GM’s hydrogen fuel cell technology and battery systems.
This is the second major foray GM is making into clean fuel technology in a week. Last week, GM announced a partnership with Honda to develop electric vehicles as well as others with internal combustion engines.
Under its agreement with Nikola, GM will help to develop and produce the Badger marque, which Nikola will market the vehicles and set up dealer networks. GM will get a $2 billion equity stake in the Phoenix-based start up.
