New England Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton has tested positive for the coronavirus and will not play in Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, ESPN reports.
“Late last night, we received notice that a Patriots player tested positive for COVID-19. The player immediately entered self-quarantine,” the Patriots said in a statement Saturday. “Several additional players, coaches and staff who have been in close contact with the player received point of care tests this morning and all were negative for COVID-19.”
The NFL has had to reschedule the game between the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers from Sunday to later in the season because of an outbreak on the Titans. It is unclear if the league is considering canceling the Patriots-Chiefs game Sunday.
Newton did not attend last Saturday’s superspreader event at the White House Rose Garden.
