At poll counting locations in five contested states, supporters of incumbent republican presidential candidate Donald Trump have variously shouted to stop the tabulations or to continue them, unclear on which option would benefit their candidate.

According to the Associated Press, some of the protesters carried weapons. Others called for the poll workers to be arrested, apparently unaware that they're counting ballots, not working at polling places. Poll workers are apolitical civil servants doing a public duty.

Others carried signs demanding, "Stop the Steal!" in an effort to prevent legally-submitted ballots to being counted. Other signs said "Make Elections Fair Again" and "We Love Trump."

Even in states where the election outcome is not in doubt, pro-Trump protesters attempted to intimidate state elections officials to demand a recount, believing that a second count would somehow swing enough votes in the states to ensure Trump's reelection.

According to the AP, in Rhode Island, about 100 protesters rallied outside the state board of elections headquarters, demanding a recount in an overwhelmingly Democratic state where Biden won with more than 59% of the vote.

In states where the vote counting is still underway, the threats are taken very seriously. Eric Sabree, the Wayne County Treasurer, said he had closed his Detroit office because of threats. In a statement, Sabree said the decision was made "in the interest of the safety of taxpayers and our staff" and because of "credible information" from the sheriff's office.
