Joining former Presidents Alejandro Toledo, Ollanta Humala, and Pedro Castillo as the still-living inmates, ex-Peruvian leader Martin Vizcarra was sentenced Wednesday to 14 years in the joint for taking $600,000 in bribes while serving as a regional governor prior to taking the top national office in 2018, the AP reports. Recently impeached and removed ex-President Dina Boluarte is headed in the same direction, Alberto Fujimori died after being paroled last year, and Alan Garcia killed himself in 2019 as police closed in to cuff him for corruption related to some real-estate company.
Of the 12 presidents that Peru has had since Fujimori’s dictatorship, two of them – Manuel Merino, who served six days as interim leader in November 2020 before resigning, and Francisco Sagasti, who was appointed to take over and served until July 2021 – are alive and not in/facing prison.
Sagasti left office with a 50 percent approval rating. He should stay they hell away from the job, lol.
