A single member of the crew has been rescued by the Japanese coast guard after a livestock cargo ship with 43 crewman and 5,800 cows apparently sank during a typhoon, CNN reports.
The ship, the 438-foot Gulf Livestock 1, broadcast a distress signal early Wednesday morning (local time) when it was 115 miles west of Amami Oshima island, about midway between Okinawa and Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island.
Typhoon Maysak has winds reaching 130 miles per hour, the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane. A second storm, Typhoon Haishen, is expected to strengthen to the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane and hit Kyushu this weekend.
