More than 10% of the funds raised by the Trump campaign and its affiliates have been used to pay for legal fees involving Trump, his personal businesses and his Administration, according to a New York Times report.
Trump has spent $58 million of contributions to his campaign and affiliated groups on litigation for everything from the impeachment hearings to sexual harassment suits.
Examples of many of the cases, compiled by the Times, shows that Trump has used donor money to sue media outlets over what he claims is “fake news”; paying for legal representation of select associates questioned in the various investigations targeting Trump or his company; attempting to put restraining orders on critics; and stopping mail-in voting.
During the 2016 election cycle, Trump raised less than $520 million dollars; during the current campaign, he’s raised more than $1 billion across all entities, including his PACs and the RNC. With Trump insinuating that he will fight any election result in which he is not declared the winner, his legal costs will likely escalate this cycle.
