The mother of Breonna Taylor has reportedly reached a multi-million dollar settlement with the City of Louisville over the police shooting death of the unarmed Taylor in March, the Associated Press reports.
The agreement, said to be the largest financial settlement for police misconduct in city history, includes commitments from Louisville to implement significant police reforms such as how police handle warrants. Taylor was killed when police obtained a “no-knock” warrant and failed to identify themselves after kicking in the door of her apartment.
The previous largest settlement was $8.5 million, paid in 2012 to a man jailed for nine years for a crime he didn’t commit, but was convicted based on faulty evidence presented by police.
Taylor was killed when police fired randomly into her apartment as they executed the no-knock warrant. One officer, positioned outside the apartment, fired wildly through a patio door, sending bullets through walls and into a neighboring apartment.
The warrant was issued in a drug distribution investigation, looking for evidence for a person who hadn’t been in Taylor’s apartment in more than two months.
