The Ivy League became the first NCAA sports league to announce that it was canceling all Fall sports due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, CBSSports reports. A decision to pick up sports programs in 2021 will be made later.
While most sports are not profitable for Ivy League schools, the basketball programs, which start in November, are profitable for the League and the schools.
The most popular college sport, football, is being considered by some leagues for a Spring season, but the logistics of that decision have not yet been determined; Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour’s called such a move “a last resort.”
With many colleges announcing the elimination of in-person Fall classes or greatly reducing on-campus attendance, and with the Trump Administration’s recent announcement that foreign students would not be allowed in the US unless they attended in-person classes, the status of many student-athletes continues to be in doubt.
