A judge in an Iowa county blocked the state’s new six-week abortion ban from going into effect until the court hears arguments from plaintiffs against the law, including the ACLU and women’s health providers, the Washington Post reports.
Polk County District Court Judge Joseph Seidlin heard arguments from the litigants, with the foes of the law saying it violates the state constitution. The state’s lawyers claim that the law needs to go into effect immediately to protect the rights of “the unborn” although no such rights are outlined in the Iowa Constitution.
