Democratic Senate nominee Amy McGrath told Kentucky voters incumbent republican Mitch McConnell has failed them and failed the country through his lack of leadership in putting together a coronavirus relief bill at their televised debate Monday night, the Associated Press reports.
Characterizing McConnell as if he is an old tortoise slowly moving through the Senate halls and not accomplishing much, McGrath held McConnell to task for his and republican failure to lead on the coronavirus response, McConnell’s hypocrisy on the current Supreme Court opening, and McConnell’s long but unremarkable career in Congress.
A retired Marine combat pilot and mother of two, McGrath pushed hard the idea that McConnell did not take the problems of families battling through the pandemic seriously and instead of helping Americans, he chose to back his Party.
McConnell countered the attack citing his senior role in the Party and the amount of pork he’s been able to get into the state as a leader of the Party.
“I think her entire campaign is: she’s a Marine, she’s a mom and I’ve been there (the Senate) too long,” McConnell said.
McGrath responded: “Senator, you’ve been there for 36 years. How’s it looking, Kentucky?” McGrath listed the long list of lasts the state holds, from education to health care to education metrics.
