Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXXIX

  • Biggest takeaway from the debate:  Joe Biden reportedly had a bad cold and still gave his best effort to meet the American people’s needs as the nation’s president and nominee for office.  Donald Trump wouldn’t go out in the rain to honor American war veterans and those who died defending the country.  Biden works for Americans; Trump is all about himself.  Biden will recover from his cold.  Trump will never shake off his narcissism.
  • As you read this, Steve Bannon has less than 70 hours remaining as a free man.  Let that put a smile on your face.
  • Ralph Lauren should be banned from designing Olympic ensembles.  Yes, it’s a luxurious brand, but it’s not even close to the style of 97% of Americans.  JFC, the designs make every American athlete look like a snobbish sonnovabitch from the Yacht Club.
  • Should the Supreme Court incredibly rule on Monday that a concept called “absolute presidential immunity” exists, I hope Joe Biden is sitting in the back of the courtroom as the decision is read and lets out a low, ominous laugh as he points at Samuel Alito.

  • Republicans bitching about inflation refuse to acknowledge that it was Donald Trump’s economic policies and pandemic mismanagement from 2017 to 2020 that led to the inflation experienced in Joe Biden’s 18 months in office.  Trump stacked the kindling and lit the match for inflation as he left the White House, and Biden has to tamp down the forest fire he created.
  • Trump wants to make tips tax-free so Harlan Crow can give gratuities to his Supreme Court justices for favorable service.
  • A government agency, the Surgeon General, declaring gun violence a public health emergency won’t immediately change anything, but it will secure government resources to research the number of gun-related injuries in the country, something Republicans have repeatedly tried to block.
  • Biden’s debate performance sucked.  Even if he was ill, he was rushing through his answers like he was coached to rush through things, not stop to make points.  His prep was overdone and his performance was underwhelming.
  • Jullian Assange spent six years in a British prison, which the US says is sufficient time served for his offenses here in the US.  I disagree.  No punishment is enough for unleashing the flock of self-important anti-establishment Wikileak acolytes.  They’re worse than born-agains.
  • Trump wants to make gratuities tax-free simply so Harlan Crow can openly tip his Supreme Court justices for satisfactory service.
  • One good thing that came out of the Supreme Court:  voiding the Sacklers’ protection in the opioid settlement.  In a truly split decision inter-party lines, the five-justice majority believed the family was unfairly shielded, and the minority thought the Court’s decision to void the settlement delayed vital money to be distributed to victims. For once, I agree with Beer Kavanaugh who implored Congress to fix bankruptcy laws that allow people to protect massive assets.
  • With the exception of a Caesar or a Caprese which are legitimate appetizers, skip pre-dinner restaurant salads at dinner.  Yes, you need the vegetables, but if you were really eating healthy, would you be eating at that restaurant?  Splurge.  Order the app.
  • We knew Trump’s corruption wasn’t new, but I was surprised to find out that Trump’s rigging of the Miss USA pageants had been verified in testimony from a lawsuit brought by a former contestant.  Trump sued her for defamation based on her claim that the pageants were rigged, but during testimony, witnesses admitted “pageant officials” chose the contestants who would be in the top 15 before the pageant even began.
  • CNN’s moderators barely touched on Trump’s criminal trials to relate them to undermining elections and national security; that was journalistic malpractice.  They needed to frame the question showing the crimes for which Trump was convicted were part of his craven effort to manipulate voters to make viewers understand it was about more than just screwing a porn star.
  • Louisiana putting the Ten Commandments in classrooms won’t do a damn thing to help students stuck in the 47th-worst education system in the country.
  • For me, the taste of summer was captured in a cup of tea from the Teavana chain, which Starbucks shuttered faster than a VC-owned Red Lobster.  Since the chain shut down, I’ve missed it, but thankfully found an online tea shop that sells an exact duplicate.  Allegedly, it’s run by one of the Teavana executives who left after the Starbucks buyout.  Took the money, ran, and took the products and customers with them.  Nicely done.
  • Keep calm and vote early.
