A tourist spend last weekend in the hospital after sustaining third-degree burns on his bare feet when he walked on sand dunes in Death Valley when temperatures soared to 123º heat, according to the National Park Service.
CBS News reports the 42-year-old Belgian man wore flip-flops on Saturday while walking on Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, an area of the park that doesn’t have any marked trails but allows visitors to wander. While on his walk, one of his plastic shoes broke and he stepped on the hot sand, burning his foot. His family carried him to a parking lot to get help.
