States determine what people are honored in certain places in the Capitol, and a commission named by the Virginia State Legislature recommended removing the Lee statue and replacing it with civil rights leader Barbara Johns, who led a high school student group that led to a case incorporated into the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision that fought racism.
The Lee statue will be relocated to the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond.
