In the midst of increased fighting and persecution in their homeland, Afghanistan Hindus and Sikhs have found refuge in neighboring India, reports The New York Times.
The move comes after the Indian government negotiated with the Afghan government for the release of a Sikh leader, Nidan Singh Sachdeva, who had been abducted by unknown forces in eastern Afghanistan last month.
Currently, there are only around 600 known Hindus and Sikhs in Afghanistan, a significant decrease from the time the Taliban took over the nation and started enforcing Islamic laws. This led to an exodus of non-Muslims from the nation, and subjected those that remained to bigotry and targeted attacks over the next two decades.
