The historically-bad Trump presidency will end with historically-bad numbers.
The last poll of the Trump era shows Donald Trump will finish his first (and only) term as president with the lowest job approval rate of any president in the polling era, CNN reports. He’ll also be the only president with a negative net disapproval rating and a disapproval rating over 50%.
The precipitous drop in Trump’s job approval comes after his second impeachment and his efforts to stoke a violent insurrection at the Capitol. His normally solid base dropped out from under him, as evidenced by 10 House Republicans voting to impeach him.
With an approval rate of just 33%, Trump surpassed the previous low of 44% seen by Jimmy Carter. Carter, however, had an equal disapproval rating of 44%, giving him a net-neutral rating. Trump’s disapproval is 59%, giving him a net disapproval of 26 percentage points.
Like Carter, who saw his job approval increase thanks to freeing the Iranian hostages, the other one-term presidents, Ford and GHW Bush, enjoyed boosts in their final job approval polls.
Trump, however, won’t see a boost: the others also went up in public approval because of the honor and dignity with which they left office. Trump has none of that.
