A correctional officer and a nurse who worked in the prison infirmary were killed by an inmate at an Iowa prison Tuesday afternoon after the inmate attacked staff and other inmates, NBC News reports.
The inmate was in the prison infirmary when he started attack prisoners and staff. Numerous correctional officers were needed to get the prisoner under control before medical aid could be administered to those injured. The attack occurred at Anamosa State Penitentiary, a high security prison that houses about 950 inmates and has a staff of 321.
“Today, our state grieves the loss of two public servants who were attacked while on duty at the Anamosa State Penitentiary,” Iowa’s Republican Governor Kim Reynolds said in a statement. “My prayers and deepest condolences are with their families, friends, and colleagues as they begin to cope with this senseless tragedy.”
