Is the world ready for another George Bush?
George P. (for Prescott) Bush has announced that he will launch a Republican primary challenge to incumbent Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Bush, who holds the surprisingly powerful position of Texas Land Commissioner, the state officer who oversees the state’s school fund for some odd reason, as well as the state’s mineral rights such as drilling permits, is the grandson of the 41st President George H.W. Bush and the nephew of the 43rd President George W. Bush. He’s the eldest child of Jeb! Bush.
“Enough is enough, Ken. You’ve brought way too much scandal and too little integrity to this office,” Bush said. “It’s time to go.”
Paxton is facing a three-count indictment, filed in 2015 for securities fraud and failing to register as a securities dealer after convincing investors to invest in a company that he was receiving a commission from, while he was still Attorney General. And last year, Paxton was accused by members of his own staff of using his office to provide favors to political allies and donors.
The pair are bidding for an endorsement from Donald Trump, who is still influential in Republican politics although he’s highly unpopular among the general public. “I like them both very much,” Trump said in a statement last week to CNN. “I’ll be making my endorsement and recommendation to the great people of Texas in the not-so-distant future.”
