Did you find out yesterday or today that your printer isn’t working? If you’ve got a Windows 10 machine then chances are your printer’s just fine, and the reason it’s not working is because Microsoft security update kb5003637 broke your print spooler. If you restart your computer your printer will make a noise like it’s about to start printing then freeze as soon as the print spooler crashes on your computer.
Stuff like this is the real reason so many people don’t trust computers to do things like drive our cars and airplanes. No one wants to be staying in a hotel somewhere, then go out to their car in the morning to find out it downloaded a software update that broke your braking system or that you now have acceleration and braking but can no longer steer the car.
The solution to that kb5003637 problem by the way is to type “check for updates” in your search box, hit enter to open the Windows Updates screen, then click on “pause updates for 7 days”, then go to update history and uninstall the update, then restart your computer. Saying things like “God damn this stupid, Microsoft bullshit, how the fuck do people use this operating system” won’t fix it any faster but it will make you feel better. Especially if you don’t even use Windows at work because everyone knows you’re much faster with a Linux machine, but because you know computers better than the IT guy you end up begging you for help whenever he’s flummoxed.
EDIT: One caveat on that fix. That’s not permanent, it just keeps the update from reinstalling for seven days, in hopes that Microsoft will get around to fixing their update blunder within the next week. If Microsoft decides to bury their head in the sand and decide this problem doesn’t exist, you may have to take more drastic measures to block that security update.
