Random Thoughts Friday, Volume XXIII

  • When I woke up today, I was in a very dark place.  Those new blackout window shades we got were totally worth the investment.
  • We already knew that when Trump says someone else–Biden, the Deep State, France–did something, it means that *he* did it himself.  That’s true with election fraud, bilking foreign governments, and now, spying on his political rivals.  He is the walking, talking waddling, screeching personification of projection.
  • We’re in the beginning times of another Trump scandal relating to abuse of office during his term, and it hasn’t yet been five months since he was booted from office.  Before people get anxious because there have been no charges and no convictions so far, remember that John Mitchell, Nixon’s corrupt Attorney General, wasn’t convicted until he was out of office three years.
  • As Biden went to Europe for, among other things, a NATO meeting, I had a flashback to when Trump argued against US membership in NATO, declaring the mutual defense agreement to be dangerous because “very aggressive” Montenegrins would start World War III and pull the US into it.  There are portions of my brain I would like to Bleachbit.
  • Matt Gaetz is more qualified for a job at Newsmax than in Congress, and Newsmax STILL rejected him because he’s not at all qualified for a job at Newsmax.
  • Year-over-year consumer price changes should largely be dismissed over the next six months because prices of many things were depressed last year during the pandemic.  There are some areas–like building materials and cars–where prices are increasing because of bigger demand, but that has more to do with supply chain issues rather than “true” inflation.
  • Our dog’s name is Edgar.  As a Ravens fan, I say he was named after one of my favorite writers, Edgar Allan Poe; my wife, an English teacher, says he was named after Edgar from Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”  It turns out Poe was also named after the King Lear character, so we’re both right, and Edgar is surprisingly uninterested.
  • Good for Jeff Bezos on going to space.  Honestly, if I owned an available rocket, I would book a seat myself.  I would love to see what space is like.  I cannot begrudge a rich guy doing something I’d want to do.
  • No one should be surprised Glenn Beck has rescinded his apology for calling Barack Obama a racist who has “deep seated hatred against white people.”  Beck now claims that Obama’s endorsement of teaching Critical Race Theory proves Obama’s a racist.  All this proves is Beck has a deep seated hatred against history.
  • An example of how insular the conservative Bubble is:  it’s rare that a Fox News or Newsmax host (or even a contributor) will appear on a mainstream talk show–like Fallon, The Talk, or Live with Kelly and Regis.  Even when they’re pitching new books, Hannity, Dershowitz, Beck et al simply stay within their Bubbles.  Maddow, Lemon and Tapper will without a problem.  They either can’t take the heat of an unbiased interview, or they know their audience so well they feel they don’t have to.
  • Favorite non-shellfish fish (in order):  Tuna, cod, salmon, sea bass.  Preferred method of preparation:  grilled for tuna and salmon; baked for cod and sea bass.
  • When I’m at a sporting event or a concert and I see a parent with one (or more) of their children, I will offer to take a photo on their phones for them.  Why?  I have only two photos (that I know of) of me with my father, who passed away when I was 16:  one was taken when I was four, the other on my 16th birthday.  I want others to have more momentos of their parents and family than I do.
  • Why bring this up?  A point of personal privilege.  The man who sat in the seats next to ours at Ravens games died this past week after a six-month fight with cancer.  He was in his mid-40s.  For 15 years, we would spend 4 hours together ten times per year, catching up with one another while watching the game.  He would frequently bring one of his four sons (two he had with his wife; two they adopted after his sister’s murder), and I would always try to remember to take photos of them together.  He was a very good man who was devoted to and proud of his wife and sons.  I hope his kids, who are all under 20 years old, cherish the photos with their dad.  Rest in peace, Brian.  We’ll cheer louder for you this season.
