Former First Lady Michelle Obama said on her podcast that she’s suffering from a “low-grade depression” caused by concerns about the coronavirus, race relations in the nation and the political environment of the United States, CNN reports.
On her Wednesday podcast, Mrs. Obama said, “I’m waking up in the middle of the night because I’m worrying about something or there’s a heaviness. I try to make sure I get a workout in, although there have been periods throughout this quarantine, where I just have felt too low.”
As CNN notes, she is not alone in her emotional state: one in three Americans report feeling depressed or anxious, according to US Census data, tripling the number of people who felt that way in the latter half of 2019.
Mrs. Obama noted that she’s frustrated by the lack of concern a number of Americans feel about the spread of the coronavirus and their lack of effort to contain the spread of the disease, specifically regarding masks.
“There’s almost like there’s a limit to our sacrifice and it was about a month and then we just got tired of the virus,” she said. “That’s been disheartening to see so many people who have grown tired of staying at home because the virus didn’t impact them.”
