The Big Ten athletic conference will announce Tuesday afternoon that it will cancel the entire fall football season, one of the most popular college sports leagues in the nation, according to USA Today.
The presidents of the 14 schools that make up the Big Ten football conference took the action to prevent the spread of the coronavirus among their athletes, coaches and staff. At many games in the conference, more than 100,000 fans pack stadiums for games.
The Big Ten is the first of the “Power Five” college football conference to completely cancel their season. The Power Five, with the ACC, PAC-10, SEC and Big 12, encompass the majority of major college football teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision that typically vie for national championships.
No details have been released about how the leagues will deal with players who are on scholarship or how networks will handle the suddenly open fall timeslots.
