A man entered a church in Laguna Hills, California and opened fire with two handguns, killing one and injuring five, before he was subdued by parishioners who had gathered for a Sunday meal, Reuters reports. Just hours later, seven people were shot in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, WGHP Fox 8 reports.
Little is known about the Winston-Salem shooting, except that one suspected shooter is thought to have gone to three separate locations and opened fire. Fifty shell casings were found at one location, while two people were wounded at a second and four were at a third location. One victim arrived at a local hospital after being shot at the second scene. The shooter has not been located.
In California, the Asian-American shooter entered a church banquet hall of a congregation that has a large percentage of Taiwanese members and opened fire, reportedly with two handguns. Between 30 and 40 people were in the hall.
Members of the congregation rushed the man, who was subdued and then hogtied using a cord. “That group of churchgoers displayed … exceptional heroism and bravery in intervening to stop the suspect. They undoubtedly prevented additional injuries and fatalities,” Orange County Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said in an afternoon news conference.
In five separate mass shooting incidents this weekend, 13 people were killed and more than 30 have been injured.
