- Why was Billy Graham’s granddaughter, Franklin Graham’s daughter, the Evangelical speaker? Why wasn’t Franklin? And was this a change made in the last week or two because of what happened with Jerry Falwell, Jr.?
- Once again, no speaker talked of a personal moment or a personal interaction with Donald Trump–not even his own children. Even with Ewic’s ham-handed “I wuv you very much,” there were no personal tales about Donald being a human and having human interaction.
- The naturalization ceremony included in the RNC broadcast will likely lead to a number of lawsuits for violations of the Hatch Act against DHS Secretary-designate Wolf. Naturalization ceremonies are apolitical activities: you do not pledge loyalty to a President but to the nation. The inclusion of this sacred ceremony is disgraceful.
- The fact that one speaker was pulled just before airtime demonstrates how little vetting the RNC did for the people featured.
- There was a lot directed to mothers and, without saying it, “suburban housewives.” Of course, there were the depictions of a hellscape if Biden gets elected–hellscapes that exist now under Trump–but also a direct appeal from Melania.
- Abby Johnson, the anti-abortion activist, played on the republican need for violence porn with her description of her experience. Johnson’s personal story is also questionable, given that she believes Godly households should only have one vote each–and that vote should be cast by the man of the house. Also, she quit Planned Parenthood four days after being put on a “performance improvement plan” because her work was unsatisfactory.
- Tiffany earned her trust fund for one more year. But Ivanka is still Daddy’s favorite.
- Nicholas Sandmann’s story is highly unmoving. He has now chosen to be a national figure, so his claim that he was damaged by the aftermath of being a smarmy kid is washed up. But he’ll still run for Congress in Kentucky in 8 years.
- If Pam Bondi is the person the RNC turns to to address corruption, they’re fishing in a shallow puddle talent-wise.
- Two stories–those of Ryan Holets (who adopted a baby from a heroin addict) and Jon Ponder (the ex-con who started a reentry program in Las Vegas)–were very inspirational, but they had nothing to do with Trump. He didn’t sponsor any programs related to these things.
- For the second night, there wasn’t a single policy for Trump’s desired second term discussed.
- The Trump campaign’s game plan is clear: Throw as much mud as possible at Joe (and Hunter) Biden. Steer clear of Kamala Harris. And avoid, under any circumstances, talking about Trump’s indiscretions, wrongdoing, history or current lawsuits.
- No republicans are willing to state specifics about the impact of coronavirus on families and economy. They’ll recognize that coronavirus happened but as far as they’re concerned, it stopped being Trump’s economy in February 2020.
