Democrats went 2-for-2 in Tuesday special elections, as Democrat Jennifer McClellan easily beat her GOP opponent in the race to succeed the late Congressman Don McEachin in Virginia’s 4th District. McClellan becomes the first Black woman to represent the state in Congress.

In New Hampshire, the state House’s GOP is now on a 201 to 199 knife’s edge because the state has that many fucking seats in its legislature for some reason – seriously five times as many members as California’s state Assembly – after a special rematch to settle the 970-970 November tie between incumbent Dem Chuck Grassie and Republican challenger Dave Walker. Grassie won Tuesday 56 to 44 and it is safe to say more people will read this article than will have voted in that election.

Calling for her second split in less than a year, Marjorie Taylor Greene has come under fire for suggesting red states and blue states want to “divorce”–a move that’s unsurprisingly unconstitutional to anyone with two working brain cells–with a White House spokesperson deriding the idea, the Daily Beast reports.

“Congresswoman Greene’s comments are sick, divisive, and alarming to hear from a member of the House Oversight and Homeland Security Committees,” said White House spokesperson Robyn Patterson said in a statement to the website.  “Congressional Republicans have an obligation to say clearly whether they agree with Congresswoman Greene’s calls to dissolve the union or condemn her vile push to further divide our nation.”

Mitchell was released from jail for the second time on Tuesday.

The government of Israel blocked a Spanish member of the European Parliament from entering the country so she could go on an official trip to Palestine, expelling her from the country and forcing her return to Spain, Politico reports.

While eight other lawmakers from two European Parliament delegations, one bound for Israel and one for Palestine, were allowed to enter, Ana Miranda was denied entry, according to a spokesperson for Israel’s diplomatic team to the European Union, because she had previously entered the country illegally.  In 2015, Miranda participated in a flotilla protesting Israel’s blockade of Gaza, which started in 2007 and continues to today.

In a speech in which he assured citizens that Russia will win the war in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia would suspend its participation in the New START treaty, the last remaining nuclear agreement between the US and Russia, the Washington Post reports.

Putin claimed that he was not canceling the treaty; he was suspending the parts of it that allow the United States to inspect nuclear facilities and require the two sides to meet periodically.  The treaty is in effect until February 2026 and limits the number and types of intercontinental ballistic missiles and launchers each side can operate.

In Russia’s version of the State of the Union address, Putin droned on for two hours, telling the audience that Russia will prevail in Ukraine but not mentioning a timeframe or the battlefield losses the nation has incurred, in terms of both blood and treasure.  This is also not the first arms treaty one of the sides has voided:  the Trump Administration unilaterally withdrew from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia in 2019.

In her third media interview published on Tuesday, this time with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Fulton County, Georgia Trump special grand jury forewoman Emily Kohrs didn’t say anything more material than what she told the New York Times earlier as far as recommendations for charges goes.

She did however say the jury decided not to subpoena Trump after he pleaded the Fifth Amendment 440 times in a deposition with New York Attorney General Leticia James, and then reacted to last week’s Truth Social post from the disgraced former President when he thanked the jurors and claimed “Total exoneration” after small portions of their report were made public by a judge.

“When AJC reporters on Tuesday told Kohrs about [Trump’s post] she rolled her eyes and then burst out laughing. ‘Did he really say that?’ she asked. ‘Oh, that’s fantastic. That’s phenomenal. I love it.’ When asked if she had any response, she said, ‘I invoke my Fifth Amendment right. That’s what I have to say to that,'” is how the Journal-Constitution described the exchange.

Former RNC chair and Montana Governor Marc Racicot told the Helena Independent over the weekend that the state GOP had informed him they voted to declare he’s no longer a Republican, excommunicated over the mortal sin of questioning the divinity of their Orange Messiah.

“The Montana Republican Party executive board, which is compiled of both elected and appointed party leaders, voted to pass the resolution rebuking Gov. Racicot for his support of Democratic candidates over Republicans the last several election cycles,” a Montana GOP spokesperson told the Independent. “Concerns over his endorsements were conveyed to the former governor ahead of the passage of the resolution. Out of respect for Gov. Racicot, Chairman Kaltschmidt called and texted the governor following the decision before it was circulated to the media.” Very respectful indeed.

The forewoman of the Fulton County, Georgia special grand jury that investigated disgraced former President Trump and his minions for their failed coup attempt in the state told the New York Times on Tuesday the jurors recommended charges for multiple people, saying “it’s not a short list.”

When asked specifically if they had recommended Trump be charged, the forewoman, Emily Kohrs, said “You’re not going to be shocked. It’s not rocket science,” and “You won’t be too surprised.”

“School safety is one of the most important issues we will work on this legislative session. Many of the constituents I serve are parents concerned with the safety of their children on school campuses and I am grateful that Governor Abbott has declared school safety an emergency item. Since a University of Texas at Austin student was stabbed to death on campus by a person who was not supposed to be on campus; and that evil young man in Uvalde walked on to a public school campus and murdered children and their teachers, parents’ concerns have been magnified. We must protect places of education where our children and young people gather.”

I have been working on a package of campus safety legislation that I believe will help protect open college, public school, and charter school campuses. We must do everything we can to make our school campuses as safe as possible; they should not serve as a target-rich environment for those that wish to harm children.
