One person is dead and another 23 were recused, four of them with minor injuries, after a mishap on an elevator going into a tourist trap Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado malfunctioned, strandng the visitors either in the elevator shaft or down in the deep mine for more than six hours on Thursday afternoon into the evening, the Colorado Springs Gazette reports.

No details about the fatality were available, but it would seem that the person who died was on board the elevator. The Gazette’s article specifically mentions that “children were among the first group rescued” from the elevator “and were provided mental health services, according to officials.”

Not really trying to imagine what happened, guess we’ll have to wait for details.

A new set of swing state surveys by the Wall Street Journal finds Vice President Kamala Harris leading convicted felon former President Trump 47 to 45 percent in Arizona and Michigan and 46 to 45 percent in Georgia and Wisconsin while Trump leads 46 to 45 percent in North Carolina and Pennsylvania and 47 to 42 percent in Nevada… that last one probably being kind of an outlier.

“By 6 percentage points, more voters in Arizona are backing Harris now than supported Biden in a Journal survey in March. Her share of the vote has grown by 5 points in Georgia over Biden’s showing, and by 4 points in North Carolina. By contrast, Trump’s share has changed little in the seven states, compared with March,” the Journal writes about the movement toward Harris.

I’m feeling a bit bipolar politically.  Half of me is a nervous wreck, looking at national polls that put Democratic nominee Kamala Harris up by only 3%, and doing mental mathematics to negate the impact of Republican-commissioned polls that tend to infect polls close to elections.  That half is like, “How the fuck can it be this close?  Have they not seen him?”

The other half of me is, “Dude.  Chill.  We got this.”  Even the bad polls show that Trump has already peaked; with the exception of three polls from Republican-aligned interests–remember those mental gymanstics–Donald Trump hasn’t hit 50% in polls frequently since mid-August, even on the skewed-right RealClear sample.  On the other hand, Harris routinely tops 50% on a variety of polls. The legendary “undecideds” aren’t breaking for Trump; they’re either voting for Harris or they’re not voting.  Trump’s hit his ceiling;  Harris hasn’t found hers yet.

The trend holds on the state level as well:  in battleground states Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, Trump infrequently reaches 50% or over.  That was true largely for before Biden left the race as well, prior to his “Return of the Mummy” debate performance. 

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration–an agency which, contrary to Marjorie Taylor Greene‘s hypothesis, does not control the weather–announced that it had fulfilled the last wish of a long-time NOAA scientist who specialized in cyclone dynamics and dropped his ashes into the eye of Hurricane Milton on Tuesday night, First Coast News reports.

Peter Dodge, an honored 44-year NOAA employee who lived with vision disabilities, died in March 2023 and a research plane observing Milton deposited Dodge’s ashes in the storm’s eye as it peaked as a Category 5 hurricane before it hit Florida, noting the honor in its dispatch.

“A New Jersey man pleaded guilty yesterday to a federal hate crime for breaking into the Center for Islamic Life at Rutgers University (CILRU) in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and destroying property.”

Once inside the CILRU, Beacher damaged the CILRU’s property, including several religious artifacts, such as Turbah prayer stones and numerous items that contained holy language from the Qur’an, Islam’s sacred scripture. Beacher also stole a Palestinian flag and at least one charity box belonging to the CILRU,” says a Justice Department press release.
