FBI investigating racist threats texted to Black people

threatening text message sent to Black voters following the announced outcome of the presidential election informed them that they have been “selected to pick cotton” and that they would be detained by “slave catchers” who will abduct them shortly to force them into service, CNN reports.

The texts were sent through a third-party service called TextNow, which said it was under a long-term, sustained attack from unknown sources.  “The FBI is aware of the offensive and racist text messages sent to individuals around the country and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter,” the Bureau said in a brief announcement.  “As always, we encourage members of the public to report threats of physical violence to local law enforcement authorities.”

Try “forest bathing” for your post-election anxiety: CNN

GAME-CHANGER! CNN “Wellness Expert” Dr Leana Wen says in an interview with a CNN Wellness writer there’s one killer “hack” for conquering your post-election stress: She calls it “forest bathing.”

“There is actually a lot of evidence that going outside, and specifically being surrounded by nature, can have many beneficial health impacts. Specifically, there is a practice called forest bathing, which involves being immersed in nature. This is not actual bathing,” says Wen, CNN’s “Wellness Expert.”

Waiiiit a second… You mean to say that it’s not jumping into a pond or stream in the middle of a forest? “Rather, the person spends time in nature through activities such as a leisurely walk or just sitting and enjoying the surroundings.” Oh so she means just going on a hike in the woods.

“This practice has its roots in Japan, where it’s called shinrin-yoku. There are numerous studies on ‘forest therapy’ that show that being in nature can lower anxiety and improve mood. It can reduce blood pressure, help with sleep and even enhance immune system function. Researchers hypothesize that being in nature decreases stress hormones, therefore reducing blood pressure and heart rate and reversing the impact of stress on the immune, endocrine, gastrointestinal and other body systems,” Wen continues and they actually printed this. We’re not skeptical, we’re just confused as to why simply going outdoors needed a rebranding as “forest bathing.”

Like they might as well be saying “vitamin indulging” is a good way to make sure you get vitamins.

Orange God Emperor promises retribution over $DJT sale rumors

“There are fake, untrue, and probably illegal rumors and/or statements made by, perhaps, market manipulators or short sellers, that I am interested in selling shares of Truth. THOSE RUMORS OR STATEMENTS ARE FALSE. I HAVE NO INTENTION OF SELLING! I hereby request that the people who have set off these fake rumors or statements, and who may have done so in the past, be immediately investigated by the appropriate authorities. Truth is an important part of our historic win, and I deeply believe in it. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” posted convicted felon President-Elect Trump on his lame Twitter clone on Friday.

First the MAGA deep state came for the market-manipulating $DJT short-sellers and I was silent…

US consumers set to lose up to $78 billion in spending power: study

“American consumers could lose between $46 billion and $78 billion in spending power each year if new tariffs on imports to the United States are implemented, according to a new study released today by the National Retail Federation. NRF’s study, ‘Estimated Impacts of Proposed Tariffs on Imports: Apparel, Toys, Furniture, Household Appliances, Footwear and Travel Goods’ examines how former President Donald Trump’s tariff proposals, a universal 10-20 percent tariff on imports from all foreign countries and an additional 60-100 percent tariff on imports specifically from China, would impact these six consumer products categories: apparel, toys, furniture, household appliances, footwear and travel goods,” says the National Retail Federation in a press release.

“‘Retailers rely heavily on imported products and manufacturing components so that they can offer their customers a variety of products at affordable prices,’ NRF Vice President of Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. ‘A tariff is a tax paid by the US importer, not a foreign country or the exporter. This tax ultimately comes out of consumers’ pockets through higher prices.’ While some US manufacturers may benefit from the tariffs, the gains to US producers and the Treasury from tariff revenue do not outweigh overall losses to consumers. For example, a $40 toaster oven would cost consumers $48-$52 after the tariffs. The price of a $50 pair of athletic shoes would jump to $59-$64 and a $2,000 mattress and box spring set would end up costing $2,128-$2,190.”

“Within each category, higher prices and loss of spending power would hit low-income families especially hard,” the press release continued. It doesn’t say anything about how the tariffs would help address child-care costs the way that Trump promised they would a few months ago.

Ghanaian president unveils golden statue honoring self

Term-limited outgoing Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo this week unveiled a golding statue honoring term-limited outgoing Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo, the BBC reports. The golden-colored monument, made up and coated in some indeterminate alloy, stands outside the of western city of Sekondi’s Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital as a tribute to Akufo-Addo’s achievements during his term, of which he self-estimates he fulfilled about 80 percent of his promises.

The 80 year-old Akufo-Addo’s deputy, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, is standing as the ruling New Patriotic Party nominee versus former former President John Dramani Mahama, who is seeking a comeback under the opposition National Democratic Congress’s ticket in next month’s national elections. Maybe Akufo-Addo could’ve waited until after the election just in case the uproar over the at least modestly-sized shiny golden statue dings his chosen successor politically.

Florida man killed while chasing cash on I-95 in Rhode Island

A Florida man was struck and killed by another vehicle on I-95 in Providence, Rhode Island early Wednesday morning after he apparently pulled over on the southbound side and crossed over on foot to chase down some cash that was strewn about the northbound side, WJAR reports.

The Rhode Island State Police say 61 year-old Kevin Elliot McCourt had stopped his car on I-95 south in the area of Eddy and Barton Street exit shortly before 5:41 AM and got out. Cops did not mention the cash but they were later seen collecting the bills from the pavement.

Locals thought the whole thing was freaking stupid. “I think that’s crazy, is there more money to be found?” said Sara Walker of Providence. “It’s totally not worth getting out of your car to grab cash.” Other local woman Lauren Senechal was more understanding of why the guy got himself killed. “The economy is tough right now, free cash. I don’t blame anybody for picking it up though.”

Experimental Boeing plane doesn’t malfunction during tests

Boeing’s unmanned X37B Spaceplane–which conveniently doesn’t need exit doors–performed some aerodynamic maneuvers in space, using the minimal atmosphere of low orbit to slow the craft and reposition its orbit.

“When we aerobrake, we utilize atmospheric drag to effectively step down our apogee one pass at a time until we get to the orbital regime that we want to be in,” an engineer from Boeing Space said, according to IFLScience.  Essentially what that means is that the X37B space plane positioned its underside surfaces to hit the atmosphere to slow the ship, allowing it to change the course of its orbit.

Penguin gets lost, swims to Australia

A juvenile male emperor penguin seriously fucked up last week, swimming to southwestern Australia where locals found him wandering around a beach, looking confused by the lack of ice and other penguins on the shore, roughly 2,200 miles from his native habitat, the ABC Australia reports.

“It was massive, it was way bigger than a sea bird and we’re like, what is that thing coming out of the water? And it kind of had a tail sticking out like a duck,” surfer Aaron Fowler of the town of Denmark, Western Australia said. “There is always a bit of wildlife in the water but never a penguin.”

“He just looked absolutely flawless,” Fowler continued. [“The kids] were pretty excited, but I don’t think they understood the coolness of what was happening. He tried to do like a slide on his on his belly, thinking it was snow I guess and just face planted and stood up and shook all the sand off.”

University of Western Australia biologist Dr Belinda Cannell told ABC it was the highest latitude an emperor penguin has ever been observed. “The furthest north they go from Antarctica is about 50 degrees south [latitude] from my readings and Ocean Beach is 35 degrees south, so a lot further north than what they’ve ever tracked emperor penguins from Antarctica before.” Officials took the penguin to a registered wildlife center where he’s being cared for and examined by veterinarians.

Want to get away from it all? “Project Hyperion” may be for you!

“Project Hyperion works on a preliminary study that defines integrated concepts for a crewed interstellar starship or generation ship. The study aims to provide an assessment of the feasibility of crewed interstellar flight using current and near-future technologies. It also aims to guide future research and technology development plans as well as to inform the public about crewed interstellar travel,” says the “About” page at Project Hyperion, sponsored by the Initiative for Interstellar Studies.

Concept art, ProjectHyperion.org

Hyperion is offering a $10,000 prize to the team that comes up with the best design for “the habitat of the generation ship, including its architecture and society,” that can survive a mission of “250 years from launch to arrival at the target star system,” with requirements for the habitat such as that it “provides Earth gravity via artificial gravity via rotation but parts of the habitat can have reduced gravity,” “provides atmospheric conditions similar to Earth,” and large enough to accommodate and provide “and decent living conditions for 1000 +/- 500 people over the entire trip duration.”

Rhesus monkeys escape from South Carolina testing lab

“At approximately 1pm on Wednesday November 6, 2024, the Yemassee Police Department received an alert from Alpha Genesis regarding the escape of numerous Rhesus Macaque primates from their enclosures at the Yemassee facility located at 95 Castle Hall Rd, Yemassee SC. The number has since been confirmed to be 43. The primates are described as very young females weighing approximately 6-7lbs, the animals have never been used for testing due to their young age and size.”

“A spokesperson from Alpha Genesis can confirm these animals are too young to carry disease. The Yemassee Police Department, in collaboration with Alpha Genesis, have initiated search teams to help locate the escaped primates. Alpha Genesis currently have eyes on the primates and are working to entice them with food. The public is advised to avoid the area as these animals are described at skittish and any additional noise or movement could hinder their safe capture.”

“Residents are urged to keep their doors and windows securely closed and to report any sightings immediately by dialing 911. Please do not attempt to approach these animals under any circumstances,” says the Yemassee, South Carolina Police Department in a press release.

We have been derailed; we have not been defeated

It was unexpected, but it was vital.  Thirty-six hours after learning that a man who pledged to undermine the Constitution of the United States when he takes office would be back in the Oval Office, the gloom was heavy in our household.   But we cannot stay down forever.  A notecard left by a neighbor on our front step Thursday morning was the first thing that brought a slight smile to my face since an empty void filled me on Election Night.  It was an anonymous hug of sorts, an acknowledgment that we who oppose the Trump regime will continue to support one another.

It signaled that our jobs are not over; they just got tougher.  We need to take time to recoup, reflect, and reevaluate.  But after that time to recover and mourn, we have two years where we must become an overwhelming force to stand up to the shitstorm that we know is coming.

Texas 2024 turnout flat from, maybe even below 2020’s

Voter turnout in Texas this year was essentially flat, possibly even below 2020’s in raw numbers, as so far the Texas Tribune reports 11.2 million voted, and in the end it may or may not edge out the 11,315,056 ballots cast from four years ago. What isn’t a close call however is the decrease in turnout as percentage of the registered voters, down 9.6 percent this year from 2020.

In 2020 there were 17 million registered voters in the state, increasing to 18.6 million this year, which works out to 57.1 percent turnout in 2024. Turnout was at 66.1 percent in 2020.

Half-empty or half-full

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin, Michigan Senator-Elect Elissa Slotkin, and North Carolina Governor-Elect Josh Stein

The glass half empty side of the 2024 election: Yeah, pretty much everything. It’s going to fucking suck for a while. All the possibilities foreclosed upon, a demented old tyrant completely unfit for office returning to power with a blank check to do whatever he wants, and the fact that it could have been prevented if the ticket-splitters who backed Dems Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin, Michigan Congresswoman now Senator-Elect Elissa Slotkin, and North Carolina Attorney General now-Governor-Elect Josh Stein had also cast their votes for Vice President Kamala Harris when you assume the likely, though not totally certain yet, event that Nevada Senator Jacky Rosen and Arizona Congressman Ruben Gallego will prevail in their respective races out west.

The glass half full side of the 2024 election: If there’s one through-line from the 2022 Midterms to 2024 it’s that acting like Trump while not being Trump doesn’t work. Many versions of the following have been written and said here and there: that voters don’t believe Trump is racist (which is fucking stupid, but here we are), but they believe the GOP is. They don’t believe that Trump is anti-abortion (same) but they believe the GOP is. They believe Trump is great for the working class, but they believe the GOP is for the rich. And so on and so forth. He’s a unique figure (goddamned media euphemisms) whose appeal to the lowest common denominator greatly exceeds that of his party and most of its candidates. If that were wrong then Mark Robinson, Mike Rogers, Eric Hovde, plus (likely) Kari Lake and Sam Brown wouldn’t be looking for new jobs. It’s too early to start talking about 2026 but Trump’s proooooobably not going to get any better at endorsing candidates before what will proooooobably be a rough time for Republicans after two years of a second MAGA Reich.

Maybe that’s more like a tenth full. Still more practical than the fucking “long arc” bromides.

New trial ordered for Texas death row inmate over antisemitic judge

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Wednesday ordered a new trial for Randy Halprin, one of the “Texas 7” who escaped from a Lone Star State prison in December 2000, committed a string of robberies, and killed a cop on Christmas Eve during their 40-odd days on the lam, after the panel ruled that the now retired Judge Vickers Cunningham in Dallas used racial slurs and antisemitic language to refer to Halprin and some of his co-defendants during the trial, the AP reports.

The court found evidence that throughout his life, Cunningham propagated antisemitic bullshit and, after rising to the bench, continued to use derogatory language about Jewish people outside the courtroom “with ‘great hatred, (and) disgust’ and increasing intensity as the years passed,” the court ruled. Cunningham allegedly referred to Halprin himself as a “k*ke” and a “fucking Jew” and said Jews “needed to be shut down because they controlled all the money,” during the trial.

“Today, the Court of Criminal Appeals took a step towards broader trust in the criminal law by throwing out a hopelessly tainted death judgment handed down by a bigoted and biased judge,” one of Halprin’s attorneys, Tivon Schardl, said in a statement. “It also reminded Texans that religious bigotry has no place in our courts.” Yeah, Schardl apparently said that with a straight face.

Halprin, 47, is the second-to-last survivor of the Texas Seven, as one shot himself as police approached in January 2001 and four of the others have been executed since their conviction. Another one, Patrick Murphy, awaits execution, stayed now for five years to the day over whether Murphy would be allowed to have a Buddhist chaplain with him in the lethal injection chamber.

Oregon ambulance hits cyclist, sticks him with bill for ride

An Oregon man is suing a fire department after an October 2022 accident in which an ambulance from the company struck him during a bike ride, breaking his nose and leaving other injuries, and then sticking him with a $1,862 bill for a ride to the hospital, The Oregonian reports.

Attorney Travis Mayor tells the Oregonian the ambulance provider, Columbia River Fire and Rescue, sent his client, 71-year-old William Hoesch, a $1,862 bill for the ambulance ride after making an abrupt right turn into his path. That’s among about $47,000 in medical expenses that Hoesch has racked up so far and another $50,000 of medical costs he expects soon, the complaint states.

Someone should write an essay comparing Biden to Hindenburg

You know what we really need right now? Someone with the guts and know-how to put the current situation in historical context by comparing President Joe Biden to German President Paul von Hindenburg. The writer should start pitching it to The Atlantic or the New Yorker right away.

“What two feckless and overly proud octogenarians that let economic discontent fuel the rise of a charismatic fascist have in common,” can be the sub-hed before like 12,000 words about how the US in 2021 to 2025 echoed the 1920s Weimar Republic and the interwar period in Germany. “No, Americans weren’t wheelbarrowing billions of reichsmarks to the bakery to buy a loaf of bread, but they sure felt like it every time they had to fill up their 2023 Ford Super Duty to drive to a national park to go fishing and rafting once or twice a month. That counts,” the writer can crank out.

The letters of some obscure Jewish academic based in Munich observing that about how the “podcast bros” of his day were getting rowdier and rowdier while his cohorts establishment class were too preoccupied with “enlightenment” and the petty day-to-day of their fields to notice. Of course that academic will have to have met a grim fate after the second half of the 1930s, so it’s better for this 21st century academic to pre-select their nervous German Jew as one who did not eventually escape to the United States or Mandatory Palestine. Then work backwards to find their contemporaneous writings and – Presto! – you have your “foreshadowing” element.

“Future historians may look back and summarize this way: The first reign of Kaiser Trump bookended a tumultuous period in which the rage of the masses fueled his rise as Fuhrer Trump,” the essayist could write, though maybe that’s a little too on the nose. A good PhD and/or MFA could do better.
