Robert Scott Palmer of Largo, Florida send the judge a four-page handwritten letter of apology (which can be read here) for his actions during the January 6th domestic terrorist attack on Congress hoping to get a sentence less than the 63 months recommended by prosecutors. It didn't work.
According to HuffPost, Palmer received the sentence of more than 5 years when sentenced Friday by Judge Tanya Chutkan, who cited Palmer's assault on Capitol Police and DC Metropolitan Police officers using a fire extinguisher.
"They kept spitting out the false narrative about a stolen election and how it was 'our duty' to stand up to tyranny," Palmer wrote in his letter, noting that Trump supporters "were lied to." "Little did I realize that they were the tyrannical ones desperate to hold on to power at any cost even by creating the chaos they knew would happen with such rhetoric."
Identified by online volunteers who have developed a network of sleuths who seek the names of attack participants, Palmer was arrested in March twelve days after been identified and named in a HuffPost story. Palmer was very easily tracked during the events thanks to a unique jacket he wore bearing a design of the US flag.
