The official death toll from a series of massive earthquakes in southern Turkey that also shook neighboring Syria on Monday rose past to at least 33,000 on Sunday, AFP reports.
Anger is growing over Turkish autocrat Recep Erdogan’s response to the disaster, which could not have come at a worse time for him as he faces voters again on May 14th. Already he’s working hard to find scapegoats, with at least 130 building contractors arrested for poor construction methods.
