The Everglades gulag dubbed Alligator Alcatraz will by the end of this week be holding zero detainees – if it isn’t empty already as of this morning – according to a Florida official’s email obtained by the Washington Post in which Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie wrote that “we are probably going to be down to 0 individuals within a few days.”
Guthrie had been responding to an inquiry from a religious group seeking to provide chaplain services to detainees there. Asked by the Post whether this meant that the two-month exercise in performative cruelty was winding down as ordered by a court, heels-wearing Gov Ron DeSantis told the Post he thinks Guthrie “was just referring to they’re deporting them very quickly, and that’s a good thing. We don’t determine who goes into the facility… Who they send in or don’t send in is on their decision.” So no, Ron did not seem particularly keen on acknowledging the shutdown and dismantling of the facility – which cost Sunshine State taxpayers at least $218 million – ordered by a federal judge responding to lawsuits brought by environmental and local tribal groups.
And neither does the state Republican Party he leads, as they’re still selling these silly t-shirts or the $15 set of two White Claw can-sized koozies with the same design celebrating its opening.
