Random thoughts Friday, Volume CXLIV

  • Congratulations(?), I guess, Mike Johnson. You just flipped the hourglass on the end of your career.
  • Evolution of gunsplainer arguments:  Removing guns from people in mental health crisis → you want complete gun confiscation → guns secure liberty → guns are important in everyday life → ignorance about how guns are used → ignorance about guns → “You don’t know the size of the firing pin spring for a Walther Q5 so your point is completely invalid.”
  • As many said, the House logjam was settled with a coalition government:  Trump supporters teamed with economic nihilists–with the pragmatist going along–to install Mike Johnson as Speaker.  That coalition will last until the next CR bill.
  • Trump’s claim that he wants to use classified information in his defense in his DC January 6th trial is a clear attempt to obfuscate by claiming he couldn’t mount his planned defense if the judge rules the information irrelevant.
  • Might the gag orders end Trump rallies, for fear that he’ll impulsively attack a witness, leading to jail? Or perhaps after he attacks a witness from the stage and winds up in jail?  I’m not so much a prayin’ man, but….
  • I wrote a haiku. It wasn’t too much effort for the satisfaction.
  • We won’t cry for you, Jenna Ellis.  The truth is, we never liked you.  You are a traitor.  You are a phony.  We chose the nation.  You chose a grifter.
  • I did a lot of work around Maine, when I worked in the health care industry. Met with a lot of hospitals in the region, including Central Maine Medical in Lewiston. My heart goes out to them, although I’m sure most I worked with are long gone.  I’m certain the horror will impact that community for decades.
  • As far as a fine, $15,000 isn’t much to Trump–although he reportedly had Habba write the check, likely because he wouldn’t be so humiliated–but the message sitting in the dock was loud and clear:  the Court is more powerful than any defendant.
  • The Santos ejection and the latest Marge censure motions are things that would have sailed through the House with bipartisan support in a pre-Tea Party era, when Republicans understood the importance of at least acting like not complete clowns.  Except Newt Gingrich, of course.  He’s a clown.
  • I only see three or four more people flipping in Fulton Co.  Willis needs someone from the Ruby Freeman intimidation scam to corroborate a bigger fish’s (Rudy’s?)  involvement, unless Ellis is the link. Chesebro links the fake electors to the campaign, so they’re toast.  Maybe one more flipper inside the campaign, but not much more.  At most, I see Willis allowing deals from nine people total among the little fish.  Trump, Rudy, Eastman, Meadows and Clark are the top tier defendants nationally, but I also think Wilis wants Shafer and Smith to face the max.
  • That last entry was admittedly more rumination than thought, but changing RtF to “Random thoughts and ruminations” just won’t work for branding.
  • Only two types of pasta sauce can go from jar to plate (after heating, if appropriate):  pesto and vodka sauce.  And it’s gotta be a good vodka sauce to even qualify for consideration.  And the only thing jarred Alfredo is good for is a hurried white pizza.  And before you get your nose in the air, yes, some of us use jarred sauce on occasion.
  • Decades from now, when historians look back on this era, Matt Gaetz will be identified as the tipping point that sent the Republican Party into a self-created decade of irrelevance.
  • Local school band playing at the football field too far to hear exactly what’s going on, but close enough to feel the THUMP THUMP of the drums and speakers; hello, filling-rattling vibration!  The game announcer sounds like any adult in a Peanuts cartoon being smothered by a pillow.
  • I didn’t said that was the haiku I wrote, did I, syllable counters?  (Happy Halloween!)
  • Lesson to kids 364 days a year:  “Don’t take candy from strangers!”  That other night:
