Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXIV

  • There is no VP addition to a Trump ticket that will add value to the GOP pairing.  No one Trump can select will move the needle for anyone who was not already going to vote for Trump.  Even Tulsi Gabbard won’t help:  she won’t draw away from the left-wing conspiracy nutters who are now in JFK Jr.’s camp.
  • Robert Hur’s testimony in the Mr. & Mr. Comer-Jordan performance art panel is exactly why Americans are losing faith in government institutions:  it was clear Hur was working for the same political goal as the majority Party.
  • There’s really no way around it:  the Willis/Wade relationship was inappropriate, and it made the case messier than it needed to be.  The judge’s decision makes it clear that it was a professional problem.  However, in no way did it compromise the case or change the facts of the crime presented.  The Trump side wanted a circus; they got one.  It worked at denigrating Willis’s reputation, but it did nothing to stop the case.
  • Gotta love how Ken Buck put a knife in the proverbial back of the extremist GOP Brat Pack leaving the House early.  He’s screwing Boebert over by allowing someone to fill the seat to run as an incumbent in November.  And he’s left the thinnest of margins in the House.  He is not the first to break from the radicals but so far, he is the most calculating.
  • Preacher Mike Johnson told Katie Britt to ignore the long history of disastrous Republican responses to the State of the Union and that she would be different.  Even Republicans believe Republican bullshit.
  • We made it through 43 different men in the Presidency without one of them claiming the need for “absolute presidential immunity.”  Not one.  Trump’s the only one who asserts it because Trump is the only one who thinks he needs it.  It’s not a necessity for the Presidency, as Trump claims; it’s a necessity for Trump.
  • Y’know, if I was running for public office and I had a serious charge like, say, mishandling classified documents or suborning an insurrection, I’d want to have the trial to clear my name as soon as possible.  But then, I’d be innocent.
  • The Pentagon says it has found no evidence of aliens or alien technology in a “thorough” search (uh huh) of government facilities, but it’s not clear if they checked Mar-a-Lago.
  • I had a third-grade teacher, Mrs. Carr, who terrorized me so badly she still manifests in adult nightmares from time to time.  And you know it had to be bad because I went to a parochial primary school and none of the nuns topped the list.
  • Republicans are really, really dumb if they think they can win the “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?” argument.  Voters have short memories, but many, many people are still living with the effects of the pandemic.
  • After Trump’s Manhattan criminal case finishes, the DOJ Inspector General must investigate the timing of the recent release of material to the Manhattan DA.  If petty turf feuds jeopardized the timing of bringing the case to trial, heads should roll.
  • The death of the House GOP effort to impeach Joe Biden does not mean, unfortunately, that the Republicans stop using impeachment as a performance art prop when they have no policies on which they can campaign.  For them, it’s a political tool, not a constitutional punishment.
  • Barney was my favorite character.  Dino was my favorite multivitamin.
  • Lara Trump signing the checks at the RNC means a whole lot of Congressional races shifted a little bluer.  She’ll direct money away from tight House and Senate races to 100% Trump. While the top of the ticket usually uses their efforts to spur fundraising for down-ticket candidates, now all GOP candidates will be raising money for Trump.
  • Corned beef and cabbage over shepherd’s pie.  But if you’re at a true Irish pub that makes beef and stout stew, opt for that.  That’s a place that goes beyond American favorites.  And as good as Guinness is–and it’s very good–maybe branch out to try a Smithwick’s or a Beamish.  But for cryin’ out loud, avoid the green beer and the driver’s seat.
  • For me, the peacefulness of folding warm laundry rivals baking and gardening for therapeutic value.  Smooth material, straight lines, and growing piles of folded clothes become the model of productive zen.
  • Cherry blossom season in DC means innumerable public gardens and parks will be coming into bloom in the next weeks.  Some of these are hidden; others are publicized.  Make an effort to find them.  Long before today’s internet, I spent years living blocks away from a park that had 80,000 tulips planted in it, and missed the massive bloom every year because I forgot to mark it on a calender.  These things happen only once a year.  Make this the year you see it.
