Renowned and respected Georgia Congressman John Lewis, an icon of the Civil Rights movement, has died tonight of pancreatic cancer at the age of 80.
One of the Big 6 leaders of the 1960 Civil Rights leaders, perhaps best known for leading a group of hundreds of marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. His head was smashed and he lost consciousness on the bridge, taken to safety by his fellow marchers.
Lewis served the people of Georgia since 1987. He sat on the House Ways and Means Committee as well as the Congress Joint Committee on Taxation.
He married his wife, the former Lillian Miles, in 1968; she passed away in December 2012. They had one son, John-Miles Lewis.
