A municipal public housing authority in Alabama has been intentionally segregating residents, with white residents getting waterfront views and multiple amenities while Black applicants were housed in another apartment building without advantages, Washington Post reports.
The Decatur Housing Authority filled the units in two towers with riverfront views with white people, taking up 94% of the building. An inland housing complex with fewer amenities was filled entirely with Black families.
The two developments provide subsidized housing for elderly people within the community.
According to an investigation by the Housing and Urban Development, Black applicants to the towers were skipped over so available units were given to white people.
James Ridgeway, the chairman of the board that Decatur Housing Authority who oversees the developments, said the two managers who oversee the projects were not disciplined.
“We don’t have nothing against them. They’ve done a good job,” Ridgeway said.
