More than two-thirds of the children in Chicago under the age of six years old have been exposed to lead-tainted water, according to a new study, and unshockingly, the highest rates of contamination were found in primarily Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, CBS News reports.
According to the study published in JAMA Pediatrics, about 1 in 5 of 129,000 children who drank lead-tainted water got their drinking water from unfiltered sources, but the study also shows filtering water either at the source or through a consumer-style filter does not get all lead out of the water. The study looked at more than 38,000 households from 2016 through September 2023.
