The NFL has announced that it will cancel the entire 2020 preseason schedule and will direct teams to reduce the size of rosters during training camp, USA Today reports.
Each team typically played four preseason games, giving players the ability to improve conditioning and get into the speed and rhythm of playing against opponents.
Preseason also allowed rookies and other unsigned players to earn a position on an NFL roster. Expanded preseason rosters gave little known players more of a chance to impress coaches.
The league and the players union agreed to scrap the preseason schedule while reducing preseason rosters to 80 spots, from the typical 90 to start training camp.
