Scientists are urging locals to be cautious as the Cumbre de Vieja volcano on the Spanish Canary Islands finally stoped erupting Tuesday, warning that the sudden stop may not last long, the AP reports. Announcing a cessation of recorded seismic activity, the Involcan monitoring agency tweeted “That does not mean the eruption has finished, because in the past this has been followed by a new surge in activity.” More than 3,000 buildings have been destroyed and thousands of acres of land have been buried in lava on the island of La Palma since the eruption began in September, though no deaths or injuries have been reported, thanks to timely evacuations.
