Senate republican leaders are working to craft a coronavirus relief bill that would provide $500 billion in aid to businesses and individuals, one-seventh of the aid provided in a bill passed by the Democratic-led bill back in May, the Associated Press reports.
The attempt comes after Senate Majority Leader failed to get support from republican Senators for a one trillion dollar relief bill in June, which caused the White House to take over negotiations with Congressional Democratic leaders.
The republican proposal would include $10 billion to buoy the Post Office. It also includes a $300 weekly unemployment benefit subsidy through the end of the year.
“I’m hoping that we actually can get back together, and in spite of the proximity to the election, put it aside and reach an agreement sometime soon,” McConnell said Tuesday while campaigning in Manchester, Kentucky.
